A Career Shattered by Weight: John Williams

John Sam Williams is a retired American basketball player who plays professionally in the NBA and Liga ACB. He is the only player in NBA history to be penalized for his weight.

First His Debut

For John, who spent his first year at college in 1984, he was even said to be the best high school player at the time. For John, who signed with Louisiana State University, it was time to enter the NBA after two years of college adventure. However, John, who had problems with weight even then, received the nickname “Hot Plate”.

 

His NBA Adventure

1st place in the 1986 draft 12. When drafted by the Ordinary Washington Bullets, he was 2.03 tall and weighed 107 kg. But John, who earned his nickname, weighed 117 kg when he joined the Bullets training camp in his rookie year. It was a sign of what might happen in the future.

Although his main position was a short forward, he could play in any position. He made a good impression in his first year, playing 9.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals. In his second year he improved further, playing in all 82 games, averaging 12.8 points 5.4 rebounds 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals. Meanwhile, he was trying to keep his weight under control and was not going over 122 kilograms.

John made a very good entry into the league in his 4th year with 18.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.2 steals in the first 18 games, but unfortunately closed the season due to injury. Thereupon, John started eating non-stop and when he returned from injury he had over 127 kg. The Bullets team added a clause to their contract that they will receive a $ 200,000 bonus every time they reach their weight goal, but they never received the bonus. John played 33 games in 1990, with 12.5 points 5.4 rebounds 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals.

By 1991, John had gained 136 kg. John, who was said to be penalized with the statement, would not be able to play and receive a salary until he dropped to 117 kg, but he could not drop to 117 kg.

John was able to weigh at most 123 kilos. He was traded to the Clippers team when news came out that his manager would sue the club. However, He was never the same as before. He retired after playing for the Clippers for 2 years and for 1 year in Indiana. Marc Jackson, who plays with a name like Patrick Ewing, used the phrases “Best tall I’ve ever played together” for him. John, who had great potential, could not overcome his eating habits and his career ended badly.
